This briefing covers the film structure, the seam and valve design, and the production and QC controls behind our jumbo foil number balloon line. The standards we hold for this line are EN71 (SGS report SHTY130500007975-01), RoHS (EU) 2015/863 (SGS report SHAHG2207652301), and PEBA membership. Production parameters, film thickness, seam width, retention window, MOQ, and tooling cost are confirmed at quotation stage against a specific program.
A 40-inch jumbo foil number balloon holds several times the internal volume of a standard foil balloon. The film, the seam, and the valve all have to hold a higher internal pressure than a smaller balloon. A buyer evaluating this category should look at three specifications: the film barrier, the seam weld, and the valve pull-force. This briefing covers the film and metallization process, the seam and valve design, the custom tooling workflow, and the QC controls we run on the line. The technical parameters referenced in this briefing are confirmed at quotation stage against a specific program.
For Brand Owners
Why a jumbo number balloon needs a higher-spec film and seam than a standard shape, and what a retail buyer will ask about the retention window.
For Procurement Teams
The film structure, the metallization step, the seam and valve design, and the test reports we hold for the line.
1. Film Structure and Barrier Function
A jumbo foil number balloon holds several times the internal volume of a standard 18-inch foil balloon. That volume creates two engineering demands. First, the film has to act as a helium barrier over the display window. Second, the film and the seam have to hold the internal pressure that the larger volume generates.
Our jumbo number line uses a multi-layer film. The outer structural layer is a biaxially-oriented PET (BoPET) film. The inner sealant layer is a linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) film. The two layers are bonded by a lamination process. The film thickness, the layer ratio, and the lamination method for a given product are confirmed at quotation stage. For a general comparison with another film system, see our biodegradable foil balloons whitepaper.
The film then goes through a vacuum metallization step. The metallization chamber is evacuated to a low pressure, and high-purity aluminum is vaporized and deposited onto the BoPET web as a thin metallic layer. That layer is what gives the film its reflective finish and its helium barrier. The chamber pressure, the web speed, and the aluminum layer thickness for a given film grade are confirmed at quotation stage.
The aluminum layer blocks the microscopic gaps in the polymer chain and forces helium atoms to take a longer, less direct route through the film. That reduces the helium transmission rate. A standard single-layer metallized film has a higher transmission rate, which is why a standard film holds helium for a shorter window. The retention window for a given SKU is confirmed at quotation stage.
2. Seam Welding and Burst-Rate Control
The seam is the primary failure point on a large foil balloon. When a balloon is inflated, the internal pressure acts on the expanded surface and puts tensile load on the seam. A jumbo number balloon has a longer seam length and a larger surface area than a standard shape, so the load on the seam is higher.
Our jumbo number line uses a wide seam profile, wider than the seam on a commodity foil balloon. A wider seam provides more fusion area between the two film faces, which distributes the load and reduces the risk of a seam failure. The seam width, the weld temperature, and the dwell time for a given design are confirmed at quotation stage.
The sealing dies on our line use a closed-loop temperature controller linked to a multi-point thermocouple array. That control holds a uniform thermal output across the sealing surface, which reduces the risk of cold-weld points and hot-melt weaknesses. The seam specification for a given design is confirmed at quotation stage.
The seam engineering on this line is covered by the safety reports we hold for the tested sample. For detail, see our RoHS-compliant biodegradable foil balloons guide.
3. Self-Sealing Valve Design
The valve on a jumbo number balloon has to hold the internal pressure over the display window and allow a top-off without losing gas. Our self-sealing valve uses a PE flapper assembly. The flapper is a thin LLDPE film that sits inside the valve channel. When internal pressure rises above ambient, the pressure pushes the two flapper membranes together and forms a seal at the contact interface. When a nozzle is inserted, the nozzle separates the two membranes and allows gas flow. When the nozzle is withdrawn, the flapper returns to its sealed position.
The valve is welded into the seam during production. The valve position and the flange weld specification for a given design are confirmed at quotation stage. The valve pull-force specification for a given order is also confirmed at quotation stage.
A commercial inventory has to survive shipping temperatures that range from cold to hot. The LLDPE flapper formulation we use is selected to reduce low-temperature stiffening, which can cause a valve leak in cold weather, and to resist high-temperature polymer creep. The valve specification for a given program is confirmed at quotation stage.
4. CNC Shape Tooling and Custom OEM Sourcing
For brands and promotional distributors seeking designs beyond alphanumeric sets, we operate an in-house CAD/CNC tooling center. Our engineering team builds aluminum sealing and forming dies for custom shapes. The maximum die size, the machining tolerance, and the tooling lead time for a given design are confirmed at quotation stage.
Custom OEM and ODM runs are audited under chemical safety standards. Our production lines use water-based, heavy-metal-free inks and print with rotogravure. Color count and print registration tolerance for a given program are confirmed at quotation stage. This is important for brand color matches, verified free of restricted plasticizers, heavy metals, and lead under SGS RoHS Report No. SHAHG2207652301. Learn more about the chemical screening parameters in our dedicated RoHS-compliant biodegradable foil balloons guide.
5. Industrial Specifications and Quality Control Matrix
Review the technical specification parameters below to compare the performance profile of our 40-inch jumbo range against typical industry baselines. Numeric specifications for a given order are confirmed at quotation stage.
| Specification Parameter | FAIR 40-Inch Jumbo Approach | Industry Baseline Comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Film architecture | BoPET structural layer with LLDPE sealant layer; dual-side metallization. Confirmed at quotation stage. | Thinner BoPET and LLDPE layers; single-side metallization is common at the commodity tier. |
| Seam technology | Wide seam profile with multi-point automated temperature control. Seam width confirmed at quotation stage. | Narrower seam profile; manual or single-point temperature control at the commodity tier. |
| Helium retention window | Low-permeability multi-layer film. Retention window confirmed at quotation stage per configuration. | Shorter retention window on single-layer metallized film. |
| Mechanical burst rate | Batch samples pass an inflation inspection window. Sampling plan confirmed at quotation stage. | Higher burst rate on jumbo shapes without a wide seam and controlled weld temperature. |
| Valve pull-force resistance | Automated flange insertion with a pull-force specification confirmed at quotation stage. | Manual alignment, which introduces variation in pull-force between units. |
| Toy safety documentation | EN71 test report on the foil balloon sample. SGS report number SHTY130500007975-01. SKU coverage confirmed at quotation stage. | Representative SKU testing or generic supplier declarations at the commodity tier. |
