This briefing lists the SGS reports we hold for the compostable line. The standards we hold are EN71 (SGS report number SHTY130500007975-01), RoHS (EU) 2015/863 (SGS report number SHAHG2207652301), and ISO 14855-1:2012 (SGS report number SHMR220700361301). We do not hold ASTM D6400, BPI, EN 13432, ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ASTM F963, REACH, US CPSIA, or California Prop 65 documentation. For a program that requires one of those, tell us up front and we will confirm whether it can be arranged.

For Procurement Teams
The three SGS reports we hold for the compostable line, the film structure, and the retention and shelf-life parameters for a program.
An environmental claim on a product has to match a test report. Under the EU Green Claims Directive, a supplier declaration alone is not enough evidence. A program should be able to show the underlying laboratory report for the claim it makes. This briefing lists the three SGS reports we hold for the compostable line, explains what each one covers, and sets out the film structure, the barrier design, and the storage parameters that apply to a program. It also lists the standards we do not hold, so a buyer can confirm coverage up front.
1. Why an Environmental Claim Has to Match a Test Report
The EU Green Claims Directive requires that an environmental claim on a product or its packaging be substantiated by recognized scientific evidence, verified by an independent accredited third party. The operative word is accredited. A self-issued factory report, or a report from a laboratory without international accreditation, does not meet the threshold. That is the compliance risk a distributor or importer has to manage.
The financial consequence of a false environmental claim can be significant. Under the proposed Directive, systematic non-compliance can trigger administrative fines up to a percentage of the offender's global annual turnover. The specific amount for a given market and case depends on the national authority. A program should confirm the applicable rule before it ships into a market.
For a procurement manager, the practical step is simple: ask the supplier for the underlying laboratory report, and verify the report number. The three reports we hold for the compostable line are listed in this briefing.
A self-issued factory claim about biodegradability is not acceptable evidence under the EU Green Claims Directive. Enforcement authorities will expect documentation from an accredited laboratory. A supplier that claims biodegradability without a named, accredited third-party report is a compliance risk for the importer of record.
2. The Three SGS Reports We Hold for the Compostable Line
Below is the report coverage we hold. The specific report number, the standard, and the sample coverage are listed. For a program that requires a different standard, contact us and we will confirm whether it can be arranged.
SGS Report SHMR220700361301 — ISO 14855-1:2012
This report covers a PLA degrading balloon sample tested under controlled industrial composting conditions. Test material average biodegradation was 77.8% within a 45-day test period. ISO 14855-1:2012 is the standard we hold. It is distinct from EN 13432.
SGS Report SHAHG2207652301 — RoHS (EU) 2015/863
This report covers the tested DEGRADING BALLOON sample. It documents restriction testing for lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, PBBs, and certain phthalate plasticizers. Coverage of a specific SKU by this report is confirmed at quotation stage.
SGS Report SHTY130500007975-01 — EN71
This report covers a foil balloon sample against EN71 Parts 1, 2, and 3. Coverage of a specific SKU by this report is confirmed at quotation stage.
We also hold a PEBA membership for the compostable line. See our PEBA compliance guide for detail.
| Report | Standard | Sample Covered | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| SHMR220700361301 | ISO 14855-1:2012 | PLA degrading balloon sample | Test material average biodegradation 77.8% within a 45-day test period |
| SHAHG2207652301 | RoHS (EU) 2015/863 | DEGRADING BALLOON sample | Documents restriction testing for the listed substances; SKU coverage confirmed at quotation stage |
| SHTY130500007975-01 | EN71 Parts 1, 2, and 3 | Foil balloon sample | SKU coverage confirmed at quotation stage |
Standards we do NOT hold:
- ASTM D6400 — not held
- BPI — not held
- EN 13432 — not held. The report we hold for the biodegradable line is ISO 14855-1:2012, which is a distinct standard.
- ISO 9001 — not held
- ISO 14001 — not held
- ASTM F963 — not held
- REACH — not held
- US CPSIA — not held
- California Prop 65 — not held
3. Film Composition and Barrier Design
Our compostable line uses a co-extruded PLA-PBAT film. Polylactic acid (PLA) is derived from renewable plant feedstock such as corn starch or sugarcane. It provides stiffness and barrier properties. Polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT) is a compostable copolyester that provides flexibility and impact resistance. The blend ratio and layer thickness for a given film grade are confirmed at quotation stage. For film structure background, see the PLA-PBAT whitepaper.
An early biodegradable film did not hold helium well because of its amorphous structure. Our film uses a co-extrusion structure and a mineral filler dispersion that extends the diffusion path for a helium molecule. The specific helium transmission rate and retention window for a given SKU are confirmed at quotation stage.
The seam uses a controlled die geometry to reduce seam-based gas loss. Samples from each finished batch are held under pressure for a controlled inspection window before packing. The inspection window and pass criteria for a given order are confirmed at quotation stage against the buyer's QC profile.
For the material comparison with a latex balloon, see our compostable vs latex comparison.
4. Storage, Shelf Life, and Shipping
Because the film is hydrolytically sensitive, storage conditions matter. Keep bulk stock within the temperature and humidity range set for the specific film grade, and keep the moisture-barrier bag sealed until the product is ready for use. The temperature range, humidity limit, and shelf-life window for a given order are confirmed at quotation stage.
Bulk shipments are packed with moisture-barrier materials and desiccant, and we can coordinate FCL or LCL bookings from a single origin. The packing and container configuration for a given order are confirmed at quotation stage. For logistics detail, see our shipping and storage FAQ.
5. EU Regulatory Timeline for a Compostable Program
The EU Green Claims Directive and the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) set obligations with defined timelines. The dates below are as of publication and are subject to change. A program should confirm the current text before it ships into a market.
PPWR enforcement
The PPWR requires producers and importers to demonstrate that packaging placed on the EU market meets recycled content targets and is designed for recyclability or compostability. A vague "eco-friendly packaging" claim without third-party substantiation is subject to investigation.
Green Claims Directive enforcement
The Green Claims Directive requires an environmental claim on a product sold in the EU to be independently substantiated. Enforcement is delegated to national market surveillance authorities. The maximum administrative penalty for systematic non-compliance is a percentage of global annual turnover.
Single-Use Plastics Directive
The EU Single-Use Plastics Directive continues to expand its product scope. A product with a biodegradability claim has to meet specific standards. A program should confirm the applicable rule for the destination market.
Digital Product Passport pilot
The PPWR introduces requirements for a Digital Product Passport for certain packaging articles. Full mandatory DPP requirements are expected in a later phase. A program can prepare by keeping supply chain documentation: material composition, compostability reports, chemical safety data, and batch records.
Procurement Planning Note
A supplier qualification process for the EU market should result in a documented compliance package before the peak holiday season procurement cycle. The SGS reports listed in Section 2 of this briefing are the primary evidence we can provide today.
6. Company Background
