01. Why Starburst Balloons Anchor Commercial Event Programs
The starburst or exploding star format carries a specific role in commercial decor: it fills vertical space with a high-reflectivity multi-point surface that reads well under event lighting. Wedding planners use it as a suspended ceiling piece. Corporate event teams use it as a stage backdrop cluster. Retail display teams use it inside a store atrium. The format carries more visual complexity per unit than a round or heart balloon, which raises the design value in the buyer's catalog. Buyers building the full catalog can review the Mylar balloon line for a general format reference.
We operate a manufacturing facility in Jiangsu, established in 2007 and registered with 5 million RMB capital. The production infrastructure covers CNC-milled aluminium weld tooling, 10-color rotogravure presses, and pre-shipment pressure testing on every batch. This guide covers the geometry, film, print, and compliance decisions behind this product family.
02. Two Structural Formats: Modular Cones vs Integrated Sphere
A starburst balloon is not a single monolithic product. There are two production formats, and buyers should pick the one that matches their labor model and their shipping economics.
Format A: Modular Cones
Multi-Chamber Assembly at Venue
The classic starburst is assembled on-site from 12 or 14 individual tapered cones. Each cone carries its own self-sealing valve. Event teams inflate each cone and interlock them at the base joints to form a sphere.
Advantage: localized pressure control and easy replacement of a single damaged cone. Better fit for rental fleets and mixed-format inventories.
Format B: Integrated Sphere
Single Inflation Through Central Neck
The multi-chamber units are welded together at the factory using CNC-milled aluminium heating plates. The tapered chambers are connected through internal gas-flow channels to a single central inflation neck.
Advantage: full assembly completed in one inflation operation. Lower labor cost at the venue. Better fit for large-scale installations with a fixed schedule.
The internal weld and gas channel design across both formats is documented in our custom shaped foil balloon line.
03. Film Engineering for Multi-Point Stress Control
Each tapered tip on a starburst is a stress concentration zone. During inflation, the internal pressure pushes against every point simultaneously, and the film at each tip experiences multi-directional tension. Single-layer BOPET films stretch and tear at the tip under those conditions. The envelope in this product family runs a multi-layer co-extruded film with three functional layers tuned to that load profile.
BOPET Outer
The structural core holds the needle-like tip profile under sustained internal pressure. High tensile strength keeps the tip from bulging out of shape across the display window.
BOPA Nylon Middle
The elastic middle layer absorbs impact and distributes stress along the tapered weld lines. This is the layer that decides whether the tip survives handling in a windy outdoor event or a crowded showroom install.
LLDPE Inner and Coating
The inner sealant provides the hermetic weld along the complex interior curves. The outer metallization is deposited on the BOPET surface as a thin vacuum layer to produce the mirror-gloss finish. The finish is what reflects event lighting and shows in event photography.
04. Sizing Grid and Specification Matrix
The grid below covers the standard configurations. Custom point counts and custom diameters outside this grid use the same tooling workflow but add a sample development round.
| Configuration | Inflated Diameter | Gas Capacity | Gas Type |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12-Point Modular Starburst | Approx. 55 cm | Approx. 35 L | Air-filled recommended; helium compatible |
| 14-Point Jumbo Starburst | Approx. 66 cm | Approx. 51 L | Air or helium |
| 50-Point Giant Cluster | Approx. 101 cm | Approx. 116 L | Air-filled only |
Float behaviour per size is documented in our float time reference. Air-filled display options are documented in our air versus helium comparison.
05. OEM Framework and Compliance Documents
The compliance documentation stack for this product line is below, and buyers comparing suppliers should ask each vendor to name the specific report number behind any claim.
SGS RoHS
Report SHAHG2207652301, issued 27 June 2022. Cadmium, lead, mercury, hexavalent chromium, the sum of polybrominated biphenyls, the sum of polybrominated diphenyl ethers, and all four restricted phthalates were not detected against RoHS Directive (EU) 2015/863 limits. Test scope is documented on our RoHS compliance verification page.
SGS EN 71
Report SHTY130500007975-01, issued 07 June 2013. Covers EN 71 Part 1 mechanical and physical properties, EN 71 Part 2 flammability, and migration of certain elements under European Directive 2009/48/EC. A current re-test for buyers requiring certificates issued within the last 24 months is available on request. Test scope is documented on our EN 71 toy safety reference page.
Utility Safety and Membership
California SB 568 warning markings are pre-printed on the valve tail, and non-conductive polyester tether accessories are available as a matched SKU. Reference documentation is on our conductivity compliance page. Buyers sourcing into North America should request the CPSIA and Prop 65 test package as a separate submission, which we commission per order. We are a member of the Pro Environment Balloon Alliance, and the membership certificate is available on request.
06. Assembly Protocol for Modular Format
For the modular format, the assembly protocol below should be included with downstream packaging so that event teams and rental operators handle the product consistently. The full equipment list is documented in our foil balloon inflation guide.
Step 1: Inflate Individual Cones
Use a low-pressure electric air pump or hand pump. Slide the nozzle gently through the self-sealing valve in each cone. Inflate to roughly 90 percent of rated volume. The remaining headroom absorbs thermal expansion during display. The full procedure is documented in our inflation guide.
Step 2: Form Duplets and Quadruplets
Tie the inflation tails of two inflated cones together in a firm double knot to form a duplet. Twist two duplets together at their central joints to create a stable 4-point quadruplet.
Step 3: Weave Into the Spherical Form
Interlock three quadruplets for a 12-point starburst or add extra duplets to reach a 14-point or larger configuration. Secure the central core with a non-metallic, non-conductive polyester ribbon. The utility safety rules and the related conductivity question are documented in our conductivity compliance reference, and the deflation and reuse protocol for rental fleets is documented in our deflate and reuse guide.
Starburst programs are commonly bundled with adjacent seasonal SKUs in the same production run, which reduces tooling cost per design when the calendar is planned. The adjacent lines for reference are documented under the seasonal families: custom Halloween foil balloons, custom Christmas foil balloons, Valentine's Day foil balloons, custom birthday foil balloons, and custom graduation foil balloons. The standard shape catalog is on the standard shapes foil balloon line, and the letter and number formats that pair with starburst installations are documented on the jumbo foil letter balloon line and the wholesale alphabet foil balloon line. Leak diagnostics for warehouse and field inspection are documented in our leak detection and repair guide, and the cold-weather handling protocol is documented in our cold deflation reference.
07. What to Send When You Inquire
We manufacture at the Jiangsu facility. We ship direct. We do not sell through distributors. If you are sourcing custom starburst foil balloons for retail chain, event rental, wedding brand, or e-commerce channels, send the target market, the SKU list, and the order volume you are planning, and we will tell you directly whether the program is viable for your channel. Email xia@foilballoon.cn. Put the market, the SKU list, and the volume in the subject line. An inquiry without a market and a volume is not actionable on our side and will not receive a production-ready answer.
Factory Capacity and Lead Time
Our Jiangsu facility runs approximately 1 million units per month. Standard production lead time for orders in the tens of thousands is around 20 days. Larger volumes require production scheduling review, and lead time is confirmed at order stage. Custom tooling and sample development run approximately 12 days. Minimum order quantity for custom printed production is 10,000 units. Buyers who want to visit the factory are welcome to do so, and we arrange factory visits directly through our sales team.
